The Multispecialty Outpatient Cardiovascular Association (MOCA)  was created in October 2020 with the mission of serving the community by improving the quality and safety for cardiovascular procedures in the outpatient arena.  It has expanded to over 100 members in the field of cardiology and vascular disciplines.

Many procedural areas such as orthopedics, GI, and plastic surgery have migrated their business to the outpatient setting with great success from a clinical and patient satisfaction standpoint, but also at a significant reduction in cost to society and the consumer.

The quality and safety of cardiovascular procedures increased dramatically over the last 20 years because of advances in technology such as imaging, and covered stents for bailout measures.  With these advances it was only natural for these procedures to start moving into the outpatient setting as well.

In the mid 2000’s the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) entered the cardiovascular outpatient arena with the approval of peripheral vascular procedures including dialysis access and peripheral arterial disease procedures.  Since then CMS has expanded its approval to cardiac Implants such as pacemakers and intracardiac defibrillators in 2016,  Diagnostic coronary angiography in 2020, and most recently coronary interventions in 2021.

These changes have been supported clinically by the American College of Cardiology (ACC)  and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention (SCAI) but have also shown to dramatically increase patient satisfaction at a drastically lower cost.

We look forward to and support the continued movement to the outpatient setting while maintaining  the quality and safety standards that our patients deserve.
